Igor Sechin, the head of Rosneft, Russia`s largest oil company, has voiced his support for the energy policies proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a conference in Qatar on Saturday, Sechin praised Trump’s campaign promise to protect U.S. oil companies, describing the economic steps Trump outlined as “appropriate.”
These include taking measures to protect domestic energy production and the U.S. market.
Trump, who is set to take office again on January 20, has sparked cautious optimism in Russia.
While many in Russia hope his second term will lead to better relations, some believe that the U.S. stance toward Russia won’t change much, regardless of who holds the presidency.
Relations between the U.S. and Russia have worsened under President Joe Biden, who took office with ongoing tensions over issues like the conflict in Ukraine.
After Trump’s victory, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quick to offer congratulations.
He also praised Trump’s courage when a gunman tried to kill him during his campaign, and he made it clear that Moscow is ready to engage in discussions with Trump once again.
Trump has also pledged to raise tariffs on the U.S.’s top three trade partners—Canada, Mexico, and China—and many believe this could spark a trade war.
Sechin, however, was not surprised by the approach, stating, “It’s no surprise that countries like Canada, Mexico, China, and Europe will face challenges.
Let’s not forget that Trump is the President of the United States, not Mexico or Canada.”
In addition, during his campaign, Trump promised to increase oil and gas production in the U.S. Sechin expects that Trump may lift restrictions on oil and gas production, reduce taxes, and focus on real energy solutions, moving away from the “illusion” of alternative fuels.
